Minetris is a newly launched indie puzzler created by a solo developer, and it’s looking to shake up everyone’s preconceptions about what a Tetris spin-off can be. The game retains Tetris’ core gameplay loop of shuffling blocks into a well and seeing them disappear if they create horizontal lines.
However, Minetris also seeks to incorporate the excitement of adventure. In this article, we are discussing the basics of Minetris along with its creator, Carlo Barbarino.
Venture to the mysterious lands of Pyraminds to save the Pharaoh of Light
Straight off the bat, Minetris throws you into the adventure. Similar to Tetris, you have to clear lines initially, but by doing so, you will venture deeper into an Ancient Pyramid. According to the game’s creator, Barbarino,
The core goal isn’t just to complete lines and rack up a high score, “it’s to uncover the secrets hidden within the pyramid. The Pharaoh of Light is trapped under a curse and must be freed. So with every game played, the Pharaoh regains life, and the ancient pyramid will transform back into its former glory, vibrant and renewed.”

Therefore, besides just chasing the eventual high score, you will also have a fixed goal to achieve. Which you can do too, of course, adding another layer to Minetris.
Minetris offers a dynamic puzzle experience with stunning visuals
So there’s a mystery to solve in Minetris, but that wouldn’t mean much if the game’s core mechanics weren’t solid. Fortunately, here they are, backed up with some exciting dynamic execution. Blocks explode once a line is completed, and it’s an effect you won’t tire of.
Then, when you move a block, you can feel its movement thanks to particles surrounding it and in-game mechanics, visually indicating where the block is heading. Barbarino further adds to the effects that Minetris provides,
I often came across reimagined versions of Tetris showcasing dramatic visuals where blocks appeared to explode or break apart – features that weren’t actually part of the gameplay. So, I decided to create my own version that brings those dynamic elements to life.” And how!

How to progress in Minetris quickly
We had a discussion with Barbarino about some of the basic tips players initially might want to try out in-game, and here’s what he had to share:
- Make sure you keep the mined area clear, as it is an essential spot to pay attention to when it comes to breaking down the wall. Preventing the wall from growing too much is key, as it becomes increasingly difficult to shrink it later.
- The next two blocks coming into the well are always displayed, so use this wisely and plan when you can.
- When the game is getting faster, you may want to consider using the coins you’ve earned to purchase slow-down blocks (these are marked with a blue trail) from the in-game shop. Exploding blocks (marked with a yellow trail) can also help a lot when you find yourself overwhelmed. Mastering these two power-ups can be vital.
Players are in for a proper premium yet affordable gameplay experience
Even though Minetris is an indie title, developed by a solo developer, the game, albeit being an actual premium title, still feels like an actual premium product. The game has a small price tag, but that cost implies you won’t be inundated with ads, and the irritating IAPS!
Yes! While playing Minetris, you will never feel like you’re being forced to purchase power-ups and passes to compete. Instead, you can keep your entire focus on delving deeper into the pyramid without any distractions.
Besides, Barbarino, the developer, is making sure Minetris is constantly tweaked to deliver the best possible gameplay experience. Recent updates have also helped improve the UI, add features, and bolster content.
In short, Minetris is worth getting involved in, especially if you’re looking for a new game on mobile to play regularly. Do remember, there are many trophies to unlock besides finding out more about the pyramids’ mysteries. Minetris is available on both Android and iOS, and you can find it on your respective Google Play or App Store. Additionally, there’s a lite version as well on Android if you’d like to try the game first before buying it!
