Shadow Council Pty Ltd. has announced that their 2D sandbox survival MMORPG, Afterglow, is set to launch on both Android and iOS this year. Developed by this indie studio, the game is currently in closed alpha testing, and you can still apply to join. Uniquely, it is designed for 30+ year old players.
Shape your fate in a devastated American Southwest in Afterglow
Afterglow is a post-apocalyptic MMORPG set 77 years after a nuclear war wiped out much of the world. Designed for busy players, you play as a refugee, starting a new adventure across the devastated American Southwest region to shape your destiny in this harsh land.
As you explore, you’ll come across strange artifacts and phenomena that have transformed the land. You can control a team of up to three characters to gather, craft, or battle enemies. The good part is that the game is not fully idle, with the semi-idle system letting your team keep working while you’re away.
Strategic combat, flexible play, and no pay-to-win in a rich retro-themed 1980s world
The game stands out with no time-gated content or forced social features. The strategic turn-based battles also offer optional player intervention. That said, I’m especially eager to try the various weapons and armor types to face off against unique monsters with distinct abilities and behaviors.
Overall, the game looks very promising with its 1980s theme, various factions, semi-idle gameplay, player-driven economy, rich storylines, quests, hidden caches, and mysterious CELLs, PvP mechanics with territory control, and best of all, no pay-to-win mechanics. It makes me eager to try the game.

Afterglow is set to launch on both Android and iOS this year. The game is currently in closed alpha testing, and you can apply for the test by filling up the playtesting access request form. If you’re selected, make sure to check out their testing guide for a smooth experience.
