mo.co team explains the reasons behind the global and local leaderboards removal

  • mo.co removes global and local leaderboards in favor of friend and group-based rankings.
  • Developers say the old leaderboard system created XP imbalances across chapters.

Supercell’s monster-hunting action RPGmo.co is all set to drop the Chapter 2 ‘Portal Problems’ Update. One of the talking points was the Global and Local leaderboards being replaced by friend and group-based leaderboards, and mo.co developers have now explained the reasons behind this change.

Sustainability given the reason for removal, future mo.co leaderboards will focus on skill

In their June update post, the mo.co development team addressed the surprise removal of both global and local leaderboards, a decision that had mixed reactions within the community. According to the devs, the core reason for scrapping the system was sustainability.

With the way XP and project completions work, players who delayed finishing earlier content had an unintended advantage in future chapters. They gave an example where a player who starts Chapter 2 and didn’t complete Chapter 1 projects will have more XP available to collect.

Resetting the progress for each chapter might seem like a fair fix, but the team believes it would do more harm than good, as resetting work every new chapter would be a bad experience. However, this removal isn’t intended to be permanent without replacement.

The devs hinted that future leaderboard systems will likely focus on measuring skill or other, more balanced metrics rather than progress tied directly to XP. While the current system had its fans, the developers want to ensure that leaderboards in future updates are fair and rewarding.

As mentioned before, global and local leaderboards in mo.co will be replaced by friend and group-based leaderboards, which are equally amazing, as the developers say.
